Common Dental Queries

Does repeated tooth cleaning damage my teeth.

No. Professional cleaning of teeth just removes surface stains and deposits and does not in any way cause damage to the tooth structure. To know more, see Dental treatments-scaling

Is tooth whitening/bleaching permanent?

Tooth whitening/bleaching is not permanent. To extend the longevity of newly whitened teeth, it is recommended that you use at-home bleaching kits and avoid dark-colored foods and beverages for at least a week after whitening. Whenever possible, use a straw while taking beverages and always rinse after taking foods, coffee etc.

Can use of mouthwash cause staining of teeth?

Yes. Some mouthwashes can cause staining (typically those containing chlorhexidine or betadine). Medicated mouthwashes should be used sparingly and according to your dentist’s instructions. They should not be continued for more than the prescribed period of time.

I have been told not to have dental treatment while I am pregnant. Should I?

Usually dental treatments are avoided during the first and third trimesters. Some procedures like cleaning, fillings etc. can be performed during the second trimester (i.e. 3-6mos). But, in general, dental treatments are best delayed until after the pregnancy. Post delivery its absolutely safe to get any dental treatment done.

I've lost a tooth. What are some of my options?

There are many ways to replace a missing tooth or teeth, most popular being implants. Other options are fixed Crowns/bridges, or removable partial dentures/false teeth.

Do whitening toothpastes work?

All toothpastes contain mild abrasives to remove surface stains. Whitening toothpastes however, are generally more abrasive and may also contain additional polishing agents and chemicals, making them more effective against stains than regular toothpastes. While whitening toothpastes can make teeth appear lighter by removing surface stains, they do not actually whiten teeth.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is this normal?

Inflamed gums will bleed more easily. If you haven't had a check up and clean lately then you may have some deposits around your teeth that require attention. There are many causes for bleeding gums, most can usually be treated with something as simple as a check-up and cleaning. Bleeding gums should always be checked by a dentist.
